What do you know about washing chickens? Have you ever washed your chickens?
I was involved with a local Poultry club that unfortunately decided to fold due to the perfect storm of an aging membership, COVID and the difficulty of tempting young new club members to leave their homes.. (Incidentally a problem that has also hit the nation’s Amateur Dramatics clubs who are not able to fill roles for leading men or women who are preferring to snuggle up with a Netflix box set over spending an evening in a draughty village hall.)
Those of you familiar with Poultry Clubs and the showing scene will know that it is standard procedure to wash birds in preparation for a show but there are other, more therapeutic reasons for plunging your poultry.
1. If the chicken is egg bound or suspected egg bound; a warm bath with Epsom salts can relax the vent and enable the hen to deliver the egg
2. Mite infestation – a warm bath with an essential oil like tea tree will immediately improve the condition
3. If the hen has been unwell and unable to keen herself clean this can help in their recovery, but ideally a healthy, non-showing hen will use a dust bath.
Generally its best to bathe hens on a warm day if possible but of course in the case of being egg-bound, you just can’t wait.
At GCR HQ we decided to create the perfect remedy for bathing your chicken and we set about creating ‘Chicken Bath Bombs’. We made 2 versions. One with Rose oil to relax and clean your hen, the other with tea tree oil for pests – both contain Epsom salts.
We then had the genius idea of packaging these mini bombs in quails-egg boxes, we do think they look great!
To be honest though, we had mixed results. The bombs were difficult to form and seemed to crack more easily that full–size ‘human’ bombs. We think you may need 2 bombs per bath.
In summary we want your feedback about this product. Want to try it for free? To secure your free sample place an order for any product here at www.thinkingofchickens.com and then tell us by posting on the George’s Chicken Remedies Instagram or Facebook, on our post. The first six people to do so will receive a box of 12 mini bombs. We’d then love to hear how you get on with them, please.
Just like the rest of the GCR range the ingredients are all tried and tested – you could use the bombs in your own bath if you wanted, they don’t contain anything harsh or unnatural.
Happy bathing!
